One of my sisters loves everything about music. As a matter of fact, she intends becoming an influential musician some day. During one of our discussions this quarantine period, I asked what she was currently doing to make her musical dream a reality. “I’m just in school studying to get my degree and I’m not doing anything in particular about that…. Perhaps, I will figure it out when I’m done with school and by then opportunities should be waiting for me” she said.

To be honest I love that she is focused entirely on school work but I didn’t like the fact that she has not been doing anything about it. How was she going to recognize opportunities after school if she didn’t prepare herself for it?

I was concerned that during the stay at home period, I have not seen her do anything related to her passion in music. She has been watching movies and spending time on social media which is cool because none of us prepared for a pandemic in this season. So I understand, alright.

I was expecting to see her do one thing that will bring her closer to her dreams of becoming an influential musician. I wanted to see her songs once in a while and maybe overhear her talk about music. At the end of our discussion, I encouraged her to start doing something about it especially with time on her hands right now.

Why? Because I want her to be competent, sharpen her skills and develop capacity.

Talent is not enough. Your skill is the distinguishing factor between COMPETENCY and MEDIOCRITY.

Most of us are talented in several ways and sometimes we think that we do not have any work to do in grooming them. Maybe God has entrusted you with gifts that are easily recognizable but you are not functioning in your full capacity because you have refused to put in the work.
